This artwork by Ghulam Hussain Wani explores the iconic Mahi-Maratib (the dignity of the fish), a symbol that has defined the cultural and architectural identity of Lucknow since the Oudh period. Traditionally seen in pairs above the arched doorways of the city’s historic imambaras and gateways, the fish motif represents sovereignty, good fortune and the flowing grace of the Gomti River.

The painting is divided into four distinct quadrants painted from 2007 to 2020 in different phases of the Artist's life, mirroring the symmetrical nature of Lucknawi architecture while utilizing a modern, textured approach.
