Mohammad Ashraf Munshi

Resident Artist

Mohammad Ashraf Munshi is a Kashmiri artist and educator whose practice is shaped by a deep commitment to teaching, discipline, and the transformative power of art. With a foundation in both oil and abstract painting, his work reflects a balance between structured technique and intuitive expression, where form and thought evolve together.

He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Kashmir, grounding his artistic journey in both traditional principles and contemporary approaches. Over the years, he has developed a practice that is not only rooted in making art but also in understanding how art is learned, taught, and experienced.

For nearly two decades, he served as an Art Teacher at Burn Hall School Srinagar, where he played a pivotal role in shaping young minds through creative education. His teaching philosophy emphasizes exploration, critical thinking, and self-expression, encouraging students to engage with art beyond technique. Through innovative lesson plans, workshops, and mentorship, he has consistently created spaces where creativity can unfold with confidence and clarity.

His work as an artist has been recognized through multiple awards, including several honors from the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, as well as recognition from the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. His contributions have also been acknowledged at a national level, receiving appreciation from A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and General S.K. Sinha, reflecting both his artistic and educational impact.

Ashraf Munshi has actively participated in exhibitions, workshops, and artist camps across the region, contributing to the broader cultural dialogue of Kashmiri art. His works are part of collections held by institutions such as All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society and the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, as well as national collections in New Delhi.

As an artist, his work reflects a quiet introspection—where abstraction becomes a language of thought, and painting becomes a process of understanding. As an educator, he continues to inspire a generation of artists to approach creativity with curiosity, discipline, and openness.

At HunarGaah, he brings this dual role forward, contributing not only through his own practice but by guiding others to discover their own artistic voice within a structured yet creative space.
